Therapy from supervised clinicians, at a fee that fits

Balm is a training clinic for adults and couples. You meet an associate therapist, and a named, licensed supervisor works with them on your care. Your fee comes from a sliding scale.

Is Balm right for you?

Who Balm is for, and who it is not for

A training clinic works differently from a private practice. Here is how, so you can decide.

A private practice

  • Who sees you

A licensed clinician working on their own.

  • What you pay

A set fee for each session.

  • Who comes

Teenagers and children: we share names of colleagues.

  • What we do not do

Medication, or an urgent crisis: call your doctor, or 988 or 911.

Balm

  • Who sees you

An associate therapist, building clinical hours. Their supervisor is named beside them.

  • What you pay

A sliding-scale fee based on your household, in writing before you start.

  • Who comes

    Adults, and couples.

  • What we do not do

Talk therapy at a steady pace you set with your associate.

How we work

A learning clinic, with an experienced second set of eyes

Every associate at Balm works under a licensed supervisor. You always know who that is, and you can ask about it.

  • A supervisor is named for every associate

Their name sits beside the associate's on our team page and in the footer.

  • Your associate talks through your care

They meet with their supervisor on a regular schedule, and tell you when they do.

  • Your fee fits your household

The sliding scale sets it, and you have it in writing before the first session.

Three ways to work with an associate

Each one is in person in Syracuse, or by video when you are in New York.

  • Individual therapy

For one adult. Fifty-minute sessions, at a pace you set with your associate.

    See individual therapy
  • Couples therapy

For two people. Eighty-minute sessions, so both of you have time to talk.

  • Group therapy

Small groups, led by two associates with a supervisor close by.

How it works

How a training clinic works, step by step

From your first message to your first session, here is what happens and who you meet.

  • You get in touch

Tell us when you are free. We answer in one business day and match you with an associate.

  • You see your fee in writing

The sliding scale sets it, and a written estimate comes before your first session.

  • You meet your associate

Your first session is 60 minutes. Your associate explains how supervision works.

How fees work

Your fee is set on a sliding scale, and you see it in writing before your first session.

  • Insurance we work with

Balm is a training clinic. We are not in network with any insurance plan, and we do not bill Medicaid or Medicare. If you want to use your own plan, you pay the session fee and we give you a receipt to send to it. Plans differ, so ask yours before you start.

    • Out of network with all plans

    • No Medicaid or Medicare billing

  • If you pay yourself

The sliding scale sets your fee for each session. At intake we ask about your household's size and income, and the scale gives you a fee that fits. A limited number of reduced-fee spots are open at a time; ask how to request one. Sessions are 50 minutes for individuals and 80 for couples. You pay by card at the end of each session, and HSA and FSA cards work. We ask for 24 hours' notice to change an appointment.

  • Receipts for reimbursement

Each month we give you an itemized receipt (a superbill) that you may send to your plan, which may reimburse part of an out-of-network visit. It carries the dates and type of session and a diagnosis code that your insurer can see. Your plan decides whether it pays anything.

  • An estimate in advance

If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a written Good Faith Estimate of your costs before you start. We give you one with your sliding-scale fee. If your final bill is $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract.

  • Checking your benefits

Because we do not bill your plan, we do not check your benefits. If you want reimbursement, call your plan before your first session and ask about out-of-network mental health benefits. The intake coordinator can tell you what to ask.

Questions

What people ask first

Do you take my insurance?

We are not in network with any plan, and we do not bill Medicaid or Medicare. You can pay the sliding-scale fee, and we give you an itemized receipt to send to your own plan if it reimburses out-of-network visits.

What is a Good Faith Estimate?

If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a written estimate of what your care will cost before you start. We give you one with your sliding-scale fee. If your final bill is $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract.

What happens in the first session?

It lasts 60 minutes. Your associate explains how they work, how supervision works, the limits of confidentiality and the possible risks and benefits of therapy, and then listens. At the end, you decide together whether to continue.

Who supervises my associate?

Every associate has a named, licensed supervisor, shown on our team page and beside the associate's name. You can ask at any time what the two of them discuss, and you can ask to meet the supervisor.

What do I do in a crisis?

Call or text 988, any time. In an emergency, call 911. This site and our messages are not monitored around the clock, and Balm is not an emergency service.

What is confidential, and what are the limits?

What you share stays in the session and in your supervised team. The law sets limits: if someone is at serious risk of harm, or a child or an older adult may be abused, we may have to tell others. We explain this in writing before you begin.
